We welcomed our second son, who will be turning 1 years old in just a month! I also graduated from Plymouth State with a degree in Educational Leadership (Concentration: Arts, Leadership and Learning). While on maternity leave I received an award as the Massachusetts Art Education Association (MAEA) Special Needs Teacher of the Year. In the meantime I was running a part time side business doing Mobile Paint-n-Sip Parties as ARTY PARTY BY MARY. At the end of the school year, I attended a wonderful De'VIA curriculum workshop at CSD-Fremont. It was such an inspiring time to share with like-minded peers. I truly wish I had this group 12 years ago!

Just a couple of weeks ago we went on our 5 year anniversary vacation trip | Paint-n-Sip Business Boot Camp in Maui, Hawaii. It was a wonderful experience as we made great new friends, traveled beautiful sights and brainstormed ideas for our new business venture.

I am proud to say that we will be opening EXPRESSIONS ART BAR in Southborough, MA by the end of 2015. As soon as I returned from Hawaii, I turned in my letter of resignation and will no longer be a school art teacher. It has been a wonderful journey with this special community and great kids. I am looking forward to our new chapter, becoming a Deaf business owner, spending more time with my beautiful boys, and bringing creative fun to Southborough, Massachusetts.
It has been a quite a while since I've posted, but life has been busy and wonderful. This year I have a new classroom for my Secondary classes. It seemed like it would have been a challenge to shuttle back and forth between two buildings but I am enjoying the school year so far. The new secondary art room has more of a studio feel and is appropriate for older students. I hope to post more articles soon but for now, here are some updates from our program.

Today is Monday, December 17th, a brand new day. I came into my classroom prepared to be there for my students. Newtown is next to my hometown in Connecticut and I know people who are grieving and processing still. As I hold my son tighter, and work with my students, my thoughts are with the families and the community in Newtown and I hope they work together and help each other heal. As an art teacher, what can I do? Art is often a tool for inspiration, creativity, fun, and beauty. Art is often used as healing. I had a Kindergarten art class today. Instead of letting myself be stricken with grief, I found myself working hard to be stronger, positive and forging ahead. It will not be easy for many of us and we will all recover differently. Those teachers in Newtown were heroes as they thought of their students first and showed their love and compassion no matter what. I still believe we can all make a difference. What will you do in your classroom to prepare our students for the future and process their healing? This post below is part of my healing process.

safe, and teaching them well, is something we can only do together, with
the help of friends and neighbors, the help of a community, and the
help of a nation. And in that way, we come to realize that we bear a

Marc Chagall - Peace Window, United Nations, NYC, 1964
Earlier in the year our High School art class kicked off the curriculum studying Russian Art, and Marc Chagall. We learned about Chagall's difficult life and his purpose as an artist to heal and promote peace. He also began working with stained glass late in his life and one particular piece our classes studied was his Peace Window. My classroom has a smartboard/LCD projector so I was able to display the Peace Window onto the board, and turn off the lights in the classroom. The effect was powerful. Students were amazed by the serenity and the chills that came about, and discussed their reactions to the artwork. Students discussed how art can be healing for both the artist and his audience. Students created their own symbolic imagery of what brings them peace and designed a faux stained glass window.
An example of a lesson plan using Chagall's Peace Window can be found here.
Art as Healing -
Art has been used as a form of communication and expression for as long as man has been around. Artists and their artwork can inspire themselves and others to begin the healing process. Art Therapy is an example of how art can help people recover. Today some of my students simply became relaxed by working on their art projects. One student made a card to the "20 Angels" before returning to her art project.
CHUCK BAIRD - (1947-2012) Chuck Baird shared a special relationship with our school here at The Learning Center for the Deaf. He was an Artist-in-Residence here in 1995 and completed a mural in our cafeteria that shows the rich history of ASL (American Sign Language). Our ASL department created a video explaining the history and can be found on youtube. During an interview Chuck Baird mentioned that his research on ASL during this project had a profound impact on him. More from this interview can be read here. I personally met Chuck Baird in 2002 when I was living in the graduate student dorm at Gallaudet University. I was hosting a dorm event with my roommate who was an RA. I set up an art exhibition and reception in the lobby and Chuck Baird came to participate as he was living in the dorm as well. He did a live demonstration of his artwork and that piece was exhibited during the Deaf Way II festival. Chuck Baird and I became friendly and he invited me to participate on the committe for Deaf Way II. I immensely enjoyed my experience meeting international Deaf artists, and planning for the Artist Seminar and creating a docent guide. I am forever grateful to Chuck Baird for this invaluable and inspiring experience. Betty Miller is considered the Mother of De'VIA and led the workshop that created the De'VIA manifesto. While Chuck Baird's artwork shows the connection of ASL with imagery, Betty's work shows her personal experience as a minority and memories of oppression. Chuck Baird noted that Betty Miller was ahead of her time and called her the first artist to express Deaf experiences in her work. But last year, I couldn’t believe it - he had been invited to an art show.”

Andrey’s pizza box Taj Mahal was featured in a “green” art exhibit at the Newton YMCA.

On Monday, Andrey’s art was featured once again, this time at an art show at the Learning Center for the Deaf in Framingham, where he is a fifth-grader.

Now in its sixth year, the annual show gives the school’s deaf students like Andrey a chance to share their art.

“Deaf children are very visual,” said art teacher Mary Silvestri, who organizes the show. Art gives them a way to express themselves, she added, speaking through an interpreter at the show Monday.

“It’s also important for the parents to see their capabilities,” Silvestri said. “Sometimes they’re surprised to see their child’s artwork.”

This year’s show was held in the school’s gymnasium, where tables and walls adorned with student artwork were set up Monday. The show’s usual venue at the childhood center was unavailable this year due to ongoing renovations at the building.

Due to the construction the show was also held later this year; the school only has a week of classes left until summer break.

All of the featured art was made in Silvestri’s classes, and represented each of the school’s K-12 grades.

Ninth-grader Elaina Fisher was at the show Monday to show her painting, a colorful depiction of an African sunset.

“I’m satisfied with it - I really like scenes of nature,” she said. Fisher added she tends to like to work in black and white, however - “I sometimes think color can destroy a picture.”

Elaina, who prefers to draw in pencil, is also a fan of animation and comics.

“We try to touch on different mediums,” said Silvestri. Each art show also has a unique theme; this year’s focused on African and Middle Eastern culture.

Thanks to that inspiration, this year’s pieces were popping with color - the vibrant paintings, photographs and sculptures lit up the gym Monday.

Some of the art represented weeks of work; others were completed in a single class. Because the school enrolls students of so many ability levels (many students admitted have disabilities in addition to deafness), Silvestri said her art class allows them to work at their own pace.

“We try to provide them with structure,” she said. “But there are some students who may struggle with the curriculum and want to do things a different way.”

Creating art can be an empowering process for the students, she added.

“The art show is something they look forward to - their art can be seen,” she said.

Sarti said Andrey is “coming into his own” as a result of his artistic growth, for example.

“The big thing for me is that he has confidence - he feels he can do things,” she said. “He enjoys it.”

Admiring one of Andrey’s paintings at Monday’s show, Sarti also pointed out another surprising development.

“It’s really quote good,” she said.

(Scott O’Connell can be reached at 508-626-4449 or soconnel@cnc.com.)

<a style="font-weight: normal; font-size: 85%;" rel="item-license" href="http://www.gatehousemedia.com/terms_of_use" title="Copyright 2010 The Framingham Tab. And thrilled they will provide ASL interpreters again, even though it is for a limited time.

TITLE:

Theme-Based Curriculum for teaching Art to Deaf students with Multiple Disabilities

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Silvestri will share her experiences in teaching art in a Deaf school that services K-12 students. Participants will join group discussions, sharing their experiences teaching special needs.

SESSION DESCRIPTION:

The Art Teacher at this Deaf school program is not limited to one grade level or department but teaches pre-school to 12th grade. In addition to working with Deaf students, the art teacher also engages students with special needs, and behavioral/emotional challenged students. The program not only services ASL-Fluent Deaf students, but also students with Cochlear Implants, Autism, ADHD, and Multiple Disabilities. To juggle teaching the variety of needs at three campuses, and provide meaningful learning in the art classroom, the art program uses a theme-based curriculum for the entire year, which provides spiral learning, and access for all levels. In addition to the theme, students have the opportunity to have their work displayed in several exhibits out in the community, as well as the annual campus art show. Participants will also discuss the trend of multiple disabilities in all art classrooms, and the need for expanding SNAE.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362963334816421671.post-18491280036404059122010-04-11T17:07:00.000-07:002010-04-11T17:35:30.669-07:00THE ART OF WEDDING DESIGN
I apologize for the longggg delay in posting for my art blog. I got engaged in September 2009 and have been focusing my creative energies in wedding planning and writing in my bride blog. Check out the website to see the creative progress at www.mywedding.com/maryjustin

Wedding planning can be a headache for many, all of those details and decisions regarding flowers, food menu choices, transportation, centerpieces, gifts, invitations, etc, etc. But for me it is like a big art project, selecting colors, ambiance, deciding what goes with what and more. At first I did think I would do more DIY (do it yourself) wedding art, but just the sheer number of guests made it unreasonable, so now I am more of a creative director to my own wedding. However, a wedding is not alllll about me, so my creativity also includes the tastes of my fiance, our families, and the venues we will use. It is more of a collaborative project.

If I was not an art teacher, I would totally enjoy being a Wedding Designer. Wedding inspiration boards are just like an artist's sketchbook and thumbnail sketches. Throw together bits and pieces to help you steer in the right direction and get that larger picture you want to portray.

Here are some examples of inspiration boards I found online (in my wedding colors!)

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362963334816421671.post-20559044869575240292010-04-11T17:00:00.000-07:002010-04-11T17:40:33.180-07:00Current Theme Curriculum & and a new art room!
*****

2009/2010: India to Africa

This year we are studying and discussing visual arts, dance, theater and culture from traditional and contemporary movements. I am currently in the process of moving to a modular/temporary classroom which I will share with the LIBRARY. The room is a little bit smaller but I believe I am being smarter about the use of space, less furniture, less clutter, more space, and best of all, the room has more windows and natural light! NO more basement. I will post more soon when the art room is complete.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362963334816421671.post-69303425828139150542009-08-24T05:52:00.000-07:002009-08-24T06:18:39.863-07:00Framingham State College - MEd Art

I have completed my Masters Degree at Framingham State....My Comprehensive Exam & Portfolio review last week went well!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362963334816421671.post-80176240175623205142009-08-19T18:43:00.000-07:002009-08-19T18:44:35.765-07:00An artist never really finishes his work; he merely abandons it.
- Paul Ambroise ValeryUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8362963334816421671.post-45413197773820349112009-08-17T10:13:00.001-07:002009-08-17T10:15:56.472-07:00e-portfolio at DIGICATION
I am in the process of putting together my teaching portfolio online at naea.digication.com/MaryFrances and also checking out another popular site for Art Teachers at Art Education 2.0.
